Africa: Tourism is the future of Nigeria says Ooni
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi has said the future of the economy of Nigeria lies in the tourism sub sector.
He said the country is yet to tap into the numerous tourism potentials that nature has bestowed on it adding that its high time the country began to propagate the message of tourism in the Nigeria and the outside world.
The Ooni who spoke in his palace during a pre-AGM visit by the Executive members of Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), led by its president, Hajia Bilkisu Abdul in Ile-Ife, said the country should not dissipate its energy on negative issues that would not promote the nation, stating that Nigeria has different products that are very rich in content that can drive growth economically.
He stated that one of greatest misfortune that has ever befallen Nigeria as a nation was the discovery of oil and gas.
He said: “I have been a great fan of tourism in this country. We have different product that are very rich in content that are actually based in Nigeria. It is very important for us in Nigeria to propagate the message of tourism that is the future of this country. Things can get better in this country and we should encourage people to move around within the confines of Nigeria.”
He said that Nigerians had also forgotten that every nation’s tourism potential was inexhaustible compared to its oil and gas that has a life span.
“As a nation, our biggest problem has been discovering oil; we have different tourism products rich in content which are nature-based. Tourism is not exhaustible but oil is.
The Ooni said Nigeria need to sell its tourism product to the world saying that what the country has can take her to another level.
