Africa: FTAN 22nd Annual General Meeting Holds in July 2019
The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) recently announced the dates and activities scheduled for their 22nd Annual General Meeting in Abuja.
This year’s Annual General Meeting is also an elective AGM, when new Executive Board Members of the national tourism Federation would be elected and sworn-in, on the same day.
FTAN is the official umbrella group for all tourism related private sector operators in Nigeria. The organization was formed over 20 years ago and presently has over 23 member associations including destination organisations, leisure resorts, hoteliers & restaurateurs, training providers, tour operators, travel agents, car rentals, creative arts, dancers guild, the academia, travel media, and et cetera.
Latest reports from FTAN headquarters in Abuja stated that the Annual General Meeting would hold on July 11th 2019 at Rosebud Hotel and Suites, former Nanet Suites, plot 1042, Kur Muhammed Street, Central Area, Abuja. And the theme for the 2019 AGM is “Research & Advocacy as Tools for Sustainable Tourism Development”. Speakers for the grand event are expected from high-ranking government officials, captains of industry and the academia.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja yesterday, the President of the Federation, Alhaji Saleh Rabo, said that, “this FTAN 2019 Annual General Meeting is poised to draw attention of governments and private tourism stakeholders on the imperative of data gathering and sharing among operators. We are already in the age of Big Data. We feel strongly that, government tourism policies and private investors’ decisions are more impactful when they are influenced credible data.”
Alhaji Rabo also revealed that the age when tourism destination countries take strategic directions, or formulate service trade policies, without verifiable and bankable data are long gone. He emphasized that it is counterproductive for industry decisions not to be driven by sound knowledge and strategic planning. In his words, “facts don’t lie.
Nobody would argue with robust verifiable data. Essentially, this AGM is in furtherance of this objective and to consolidate on some achievements regarding tourism research, policy advocacy and tourist products development”.
The FTAN President revealed that since his election in June 2017, he has overseen the setting up of a new Research & Advocacy Department at FTAN head office in Abuja. He said he had also secured partnerships of professional research organisations in Nigeria and abroad, including the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, under the Nigeria Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) implementation plans.
Typically, FTAN Annual General Meetings are a row call of the Who-is-Who in Nigeria’s tourism industry. This is because FTAN is recognized as the authentic mouthpiece of tourism and related business operators in Nigeria. The Federation is the leading pressure groups for the industry, hence it is very strong on advocacy and bridge-building with States and Federal governments.
Activities lined up for this 22nd FTAN Annual General Meeting include exhibitions by State governments, training/workshop on Tour Operations, product launch by leading travel service providers, awe-inspiring cultural display and Africa-oriented entertainments.
Participation in the 2019 AGM activities is free of charge to the general public, except for the Elections where only registered FTAN member associations are entitled. Moreover, elections into the Executive Board of FTAN is usually hotly contested, albeit, in the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
