Aviation: 5m passenger Terminal 3 at KIA Ghana ready in 2017
The status of work on the state-of-the–art terminal three of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is 20 per cent up, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has said.
According to GACL, the project is progressing steadily, and will be completed on schedule (2017).
It will be recalled that in March this year, President John Mahama and his Turkish counterpart President Recep Tayyip Erdogan jointly cut sod for the commencement of work on Terminal 3 at the KIA.
The new international terminal is a design and build concept expected to be completed in 2017.
The new terminal will provide additional capacity and attractions for an increasing number of airlines and passengers to Kotoka International Airport as an origin and destination airport as well as a transfer hub for other West African destinations.
When completed, the facility will handle 5 million passengers a year, process 1,250 passengers per hour, accommodate six boarding bridges, encompass a large commercial and retail area with three business lounges, purpose built transit facilities
Terminal 3 fits into Ghana Airports Company’s vision of positioning Ghana as the preferred aviation hub and leader in airport business in West Africa.
It is also in line with government efforts at transforming the aviation industry in Ghana.
The terminal is designed to have modern airport terminal facilities and will undoubtedly position KIA among the best equipped airport in the region.
Until the last quarter of 2010, the KIA had only two boarding gates. The GACL in partnership with United Airlines and Star Alliance constructed three additional boarding gates to improve facilitation. Three more gates have subsequently been constructed bringing to eight (8) the number of boarding gates at KIA.
In September 2013, the Board of the company, chaired by Mr Tony Lithur embarked on a complete strategic redirection with a focus on upgrading and transforming KIA and all its subsidiary airports namely Kumasi, Sunyani and Tamale to conform to current trends in aviation infrastructure and service delivery.
The new strategic direction aligned perfectly with the corporate vision “to position Ghana as the preferred gateway and leader in Airport business in West Africa.” and Corporate mission “to provide world class facilities and services for the benefit of our stakeholders.”
Subsequently, the arrival hall was decongested by expanding the existing floor area by 5,148m2, provision and installation of two new baggage handling equipment to bring to four the number of baggage carousels in the arrival hall, provision and installation of twenty-six immigration booths an increase of 14 over the existing 12 booths, replacement of air-condition system, installation of CCTV cameras, reroofing the entire terminal building, refurbishment and rehabilitating all the washrooms, redesign and expansion of the car parks, installation of two new escalators and lifts and the installation of moving walkway at the arrival hall ramp area. All these projects are being executed alongside the Phase 3 Development project at the airport.
